The Future of Fashion will be revealed in two viewing formats – live on the runway and live on the web– when the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) holds its highly anticipated annual graduating students runway show on Wednesday, May 1, 2013, at 6:30 pm at FIT.

While admittance to the runway show is by invitation only, FIT has established an alternative way for the world to see the action on the catwalk. The Future of Fashion will be streamed live on the web at 6:30 pm EDT at The Future of Fashion official website, fitnyc.edu/futureoffashion.

Among those expected in the front row at the 6:30 pm show are Rag + Bone’s Marcus Wainwright and David Neville, couture designer Amsale Aberra, knitwear artist Lars Andersson, sustainability designer Sylvia Heisel, and other notable designers.

The internationally renowned Fashion Design program at the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) was established in 1944, the year the college was founded. The program’s close ties to industry help ensure that the curriculum continually evolves, immersing students in current real-world practice. The program provides both an essential foundation for creating apparel and advanced study in specialized areas. Students intern with leading designers and design houses, and have the opportunity to study abroad in FIT’s programs in Florence and Milan. Notable alumni include Calvin Klein, Michael Kors, Nanette Lepore, Amsale Aberra, Reem Acra, Nina Garcia, Francisco Costa, Brian Atwood, Ralph Rucci, Michelle Smith, Andrew Fezza, Dennis Basso, Norma Kamali, John Bartlett, Stephen Burrows, Jhane Barnes, Miranda Morrison, Kari Sigerson, and Rebecca Moses.

The students will show their designs from five categories which include Knitwear, Sportswear, Children’s Wear, Special Occasion and Intimate Apparel. On the judges panel this year will be Kate Betts, Lilliana Vazquez, Alana Kelen, Colleen Sherin, Joe Zee and Blogger Bryan Grey-Yambao of BryanBoy.

Above is a preview of what to come. This year for the first time 140 students presented their work to the panel of judges last week and they were quite impressed by what they saw.

For more information about the judges, mentors and students visit the Future of Fashion at FIT.

Fashion designers whose businesses are based in one of New York City’s five boroughs and have been open for at least one year are eligible to apply for a free program to be held at the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) that will teach them the skills needed to successfully run a fashion label. Up to 35 applicants will be accepted to the Second Annual Design Entrepreneurs NYC program—an intensive, classroom-style “mini-MBA” program.

Applications are due no later than March 31, 2013. The application form is available online at www.designentrepreneursnyc.com.

Classes will again be taught by FIT faculty and other industry professionals and will focus on fashion business marketing, operations, and financial management. The program will culminate with each participant writing and refining a business plan with the help of industry experts. Participants who successfully complete the program will have the opportunity to present their plans to and receive feedback from a panel of influential fashion leaders.

The program will kick off with an orientation on May 30, 2013, followed by three intensive weekends of instruction on Saturdays and Sundays, June 1-16, 2013. Between June and September, participants will formalize their business plans with the assistance of instructors, ending the program with a live presentation of their business plans to a panel of industry leaders.

Additionally, Design Entrepreneurs NYC participants will have free access to a number of FIT programs, including workshops, personal tours of The Museum at FIT, and lectures by iconic fashion figures.

Jeanette Nostra, president of G-III Apparel Group, will serve as FIT’s industry liaison for the program. Drawing on her wide-ranging experience, Ms. Nostra will serve as a mentor to the program’s students, reviewing the curriculum, bringing in guest speakers, and hosting program events.

FIT was selected for the second year by the New York City Economic Development Corporation to manage and implement Design Entrepreneurs NYC, one of six initiatives that resulted from Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s Fashion.NYC.2020 plan. Fashion.NYC.2020 is designed to sustain and grow the $55 billion fashion industry in New York.

About New York City Economic Development Corporation

Pop Sensation and Grammy Winning singing sensation Rihanna is set to launch her first reality TV show. Styled to Rock will air on the Style Network and will be the first show of it’s type where music meets fashion. Rihanna, long considered a risk taker and a fashion icon, will be the Executive Producer.

Set to premiere on the Style Network in 2013 the hourlong 10-episode series gives 12 up-and-coming designers the opportunity of a lifetime: to create unique fashion pieces for A-list celebrities. The stakes will be high as these driven artists vie for the title of America’s next trendsetting designer.

“Rihanna is a trailblazer, a trendsetter and the epitome of style. She has a powerful and unique point-of-view that transcends every aspect of pop culture, including fashion, and is a leading creative force,” said Salaam Coleman Smith, President, Style Media. “On the heels of our successful network rebrand, Styled to Rock and Style’s new partnership with Rihanna will reinvent the fashion competition genre, fueling our viewers’ insatiable appetite for all things style.”

Do you have what it takes to design for some of the biggest names in entertainment? If so, Rihanna is inviting innovative designers who believe they represent the future of fashion to apply online at styledtorockcasting.com to be considered for the new competition series.

“Fashion has always played an integral part in my life and career,” said Rihanna. “I am so excited to partner with Style Network and share my creative insight with these 12 designers and give them this opportunity to showcase their work.”

The competition launches with a nationwide search for cutting-edge designers looking to take their craft to the next level. Rihanna will personally select the 12 designers who will compete for the coveted opportunity to dress some of the biggest names in entertainment. To help the designers reach their ultimate artistic potential, Rihanna will enlist the guidance of three top experts from the fashion industry to serve as mentors. Each week, challenges will push the designers to their creative limits when they are tasked with styling a star, and that celebrity guest will determine which designer best achieves their vision—and advances to the next week of competition. Faced with the threat of elimination, the remaining designers must meet with the mentors to discuss where they fell short and ultimately who will be sent home. In the end, one designer will be named the winner of Styled to Rock.

In 2010, when fashion marketer Laura Adamson was managing a pop-up store in New York City for independent designers, the concept of developing a website was the last thing on her mind. . .until she saw firsthand how these temp shops left so many talented people in the cold, in search of another venue to display their wares. Fast forward to June 2011, the successful launch of the website StyleOutsideTheBox.com was a dream come true, not only for Laura who always wanted to run her own business, but for the growing roster of over 400 independent clothing, jewelry, toy and home decor designers who now have a place to call home. New this year is a Body & Bath category for artisan soaps, lotions and creams.

StyleOutsideTheBox.Com Founder and CEO Laura Adamson is always on the go searching for the newest trends from independent designers across the globe. Laura sees SOTB as a two way street. “Our shoppers win because every designer and product is carefully selected for quality, style, and most importantly originality,” she explains. “We have strict standards where the emphasis is on exclusivity and one-of-a-kind, as well as exceptional customer satisfaction and service. And our designers win because they’re given their own fully maintained storefront within the website – so they can focus on their own creativity and leave the marketing and promotion to us.”

Adamson was one of the lucky ones because she landed a job at a New York fashion company fresh out of Penn State University, starting out as an Analytics Executive. When the economy turned, the company tried a new approach to selling products, thrusting Laura into the turbulent world of pop-up shops that take up vacant retail space in metro markets and have, at best, very short lifespans. For Laura it was an eye-opener, going from a company that mass produced all of its products to working with unique, individual, young designers who had a difficult time making a decent living doing what they do best, and often saw their work ripped off by other designers or mass marketers. “It was my job as a pop-up shop manager to find new talent. During the holiday season I literally walked every outdoor market in the city, watching designers stand in the cold and rain trying to sell their products. It was easy to see why every designer I approached wanted to be part of our pop-ups.”

It didn’t take long for Laura to visualize SOTB – a virtual pop-up where designers could still maintain their own shops (and personally fulfill each and every order), and not get concerned with all of the effort that goes into physically attending the shows and making the sale. That way a shopper can purchase a blouse from a designer in London, a piece of jewelry from an emerging American designer, and a handbag handmade in Massachusetts, all at the same time on the same website.

Laura’s other source of inspiration were the shoppers, themselves. “In spite of all those swollen ankles from walking the outdoor markets, at the end of the day it made me happy to see customers swoon over those wonderful, one-of-a-kind products. It was time to create a new way to bring these two forces together.”

How is another matter. To set SOTB apart from a burgeoning shop-sites crowd, Adamson devised a style council so every designer and their products go through a jury process. “We always choose quality over quantity,” Laura explains, “and every one of our categories – Home/Decor, Women, Men, Jewelry, Baby/Child, Body&Bath and Gifts – has a strict number of allotments. The goal, always, is to give our customers the best in quality, value and originality, and the guarantee they are shopping among one-of-a-kind quality products.”

Designers who accept SOTB’s invitation are then given their own storefront that is built around their own preferences and products, plus the luxury of having a web tech team at their fingertips 24/7 to update and maintain. They are showcased on SOTB’s homepage, newsletter and social media forms including Facebook, Twitter and Tumbir. In addition, customers can communicate with the designers via the website, to ask questions or request something custom-made.

Once an order goes through the website’s checkout, the designer is notified and they directly e-mail the customer that the order is being processed. Domestic orders (excluding custom) are shipped within 5-7 business days – international orders within 7-10 days.

If you are an independent designer looking to showcase your apparel, accessories or gifts fill out the Designer Submission Form and contact Style Outside The Box.

Please use the Comments to leave us the URL of your storefront!!!

GenArt’s Fashion Program alumni designers include Rodarte, Zac Posen, Phillip Lim, Ohne Titel, Peter Som, Geren Ford, Dannijo, Rebecca Taylor, Raquel Allegra, Vena Cava, Dieppa Restrepo, Geren Ford, Maryam Nassir Zadeh, Rodebjer, All Saints and countless others.

“Fresh Faces is different this season because our designers are a bit more established than in previous years,” said Aurora James, curator of Fresh Faces in Fashion. “We’re really trying to take designers who were well known in their own markets and give them a bigger platform — one of the biggest platforms in the world, New York Fashion Week.”

Come For Breakfast

Comeforbreakfast is an independent label created in 2009 by Antonio Romano and Francesco Alagna. The creative duo got together to express their mutual skills in a contemporary fashion project with a crossover philosophy and high design content.

Romano is the fashion designer, graduated at Polimoda in Florence, giving the brand its true spirit and creating the original prints that, since the beginning, profoundly defined the main features of the brand.

Alagna, on the other hand, after a degree in Industrial Design and a Master in Fashion Buying at Marangoni in Milan, started collaborating with prime international companies to get the needed skills to develop the brand on a commercial level.

From the debut collection, the design of each garment has steadily evolved until growing into a full total look: printed topwear with original patterns – a Comeforbreakfast signature item – was followed by fleece, pants and streamiline dresses. The actual collection is also consistent in knitwear, outwear and accessories.

Comeforbreakfast aesthetic codes translate into a minimalist and apparently simple mood: in every item the research is tireless, aimed to reach a contemporary modern fit, through a delicate balance among fabrics, shapes and details into a new concept of Made in Italy.

Gretchen Jones

Although Gretchen Jones now calls Brooklyn, New York home, she has never lost touch with her rural, Western roots. At her collections core is a respect for nature and a social and environmental consciousness. Through her work she maintains a connection with the rustic and artisanal, by working primarily with natural materials, such as leather, silk, wool, linen, bamboo, and organic cotton. The collection is entirely produced domestically, and aligned with the Save the Garment Center, a New York City based organization that supports local craftspeople and ethical business practices. Jones focuses on the symbiotic relationships between fashion, art, music, literature, architecture and nature, while the American South West touches and colors all her work. Her collections infuse an earthy Americana with a lingering 1970’s romanticism through subtle color and print combinations and silhouettes.

Katungulu Mwendwa

Katungulu Mwendwa is a young, enthusiastic, upcoming fashion designer born and raised in Nairobi, Kenya. Taking fashion as wearable art, her passion for design enables her to incorporate other art forms that she loves, such as music, writing, handcrafts, and drawing in the development of garments. Ultimately, her deep seated inspiration comes from those traditional cultures, both in Kenya as well the rest of Africa, that are barely touched by modernity. She combines these experiences and inspiration to create an unusual mix that is new and exciting.

Katungulu Mwendwa is aware that Kenya as well as other African cities rapid economic development may lead to the death of its traditional cultures. By referencing these cultures in contemporised designs while promoting her collections as extensions of these cultures, she hopes to popularise and create more awareness of them to safeguard their longevity.

The theme for both her past 2012 A/W and current S/S collection is inspired by the Tuareg (Indigo People), set in a fantasized concept of Northern Africa in the distant future of a post apocalyptic world. The setting for the collection provides a time period when the world would be undergoing recovery. It is a chance for humanity to re-examine the past and opt to do things differently and make things right.
