Q & A: Sweteez Creative and Marketing Director Alyssa Mandell

Alyssa Mandell is the creative mind and the Marketing Director of Sweteez, a company located in Moorpark, California that caters to everyone from the professional athlete to the Weekend Warrior at the fitness studio.   Recognizing a need to be able to secure, organize and protect your belongings while working out (Cell Phone, Ipod, Keys, Scan Card, etc…) Alyssa came up with the the concept of the antimicrobial fitness towel.

We caught up with her in between your busy schedule as a Certified Pilates Instructor to ask her about herself and the idea behind the “Smart Towel”.

Sweteez

Tell us about your background and your education.

I started dancing at the age of 3 and have been dancing ever since! I trained at Retter’s Academy of Dance and was a Scholarship recipient as well as a member of their nationally ranked Rhythm Machine Company. After graduating from high school, I knew I wanted to continue on with dance into college and was blessed to be accepted into the dance department at the University of California, Irvine (UCI). I graduated from the University of California, Irvine in 2010 with my BA in Dance and a minor in Education.

Any additional training?

While I was in college, I was faced with a serious dance injury that threatened my career. I had dislocated my hip and needed surgery immediately. After taking the quarter off from school, I used Pilates as a form of rehabilitation for my injury. My love for Pilates was solidified after that experience, and when I returned to school 3 months later, I underwent an extensive 8 month Pilates Certification Program, and I knew it was something I wanted to have in my life forever. I am currently studying to be a Certified Sports Injury Specialist, which is something I am also passionate about.

Where did the inspiration for the “Smart Towel” come from?

I was at the gym with mom one day, and saw that she brought her own towel, yet also had her cell phone, keys, and iPod along with her. She kept dropping her things, leaving them behind at previous machines, and she began to get frustrated because she didn’t have a place to hold her belongings to keep them secure so she could continue on with her workout. It was on the drive home from the gym that the idea of the Smart Towel was born.

Who did you collaborate with to come up with the antibacterial agent used to fight bacteria and germs found in fitness, yoga, dance, gymnastics or Pilates studios?

Well, once we came home from the gym, my mom and I pitched this idea to my dad. As a successful businessman, he had many questions and wanted to hear my pitch. I drew out a sketch, pitched a name and a concept, and he loved what I had done, but something was missing. It was then that my dad knew that in order to make this towel more than just a towel or substitute for a gym bag, it needed to protect. After extensive research, this idea was formed.

Can you tell us more about the benefits of the antimicrobial workout towel?

Not only does the towel fight germs, but also it does not allow germs to spread and harbor in the towel, and germs cannot be transmitted to and from the towel. So, after your yoga or Pilates class, you can wipe your face with the same towel that you laid down on without worrying about bacteria, MRSA, and other germs that are prevalent in workout environments.

Sweteez

How did you choose the name for your company?

I knew that I wanted the name to not only make sense to the customer, but also be self-explanatory. Sweteez came from the idea of “making sweating easier,” in the sense that you can enjoy your workout, yet allow your mind to be at ease knowing your belongings are secure and you are being protected. We took the two words “Sweat” and “Ease” and combined them to make Sweteez!

How long did it take you to launch your company?

We began developing our brand that very day my mom and I came home from the gym. After extensive research on antimicrobial agents, fabrics, our patented colored zippers, and our overall view of what we wanted Sweteez to represent and become, our process took about 4 months.

What brings you the greatest joy when you are at work?

Knowing that Sweteez is a smart product that can truly make a positive change and have a positive influence on health gives me the greatest joy. The fact that my incredible family has been with me through this journey and has allowed me to follow this dream makes it a very special company for me, and it is more fun than it is work because I enjoy it so much.

What was your biggest hurdle in launching your product/company and how did you overcome it?

My biggest hurdle was the creative process that it took to design Sweteez. I had very high standards of what I wanted my product to look like, feel like, and represent. Standing my ground and sticking with my creative vision was not only my biggest hurdle but also how I overcame it.

I saw you mentioned that the smart towel was made and manufactured in the USA. Why was that so important to you personally?

This is extremely important to me because at a time when our economy is being challenged, I feel a responsibility to help provide jobs for Americans. I feel that support and giving back is a huge part of life, and a huge part of my company.

What is the best piece of advice you can give to others who dream of launching their own business?

Stand your ground and follow your vision. Each person has his or her own passion and uniqueness, and that is what creates the wonderful world we live in today. Overcoming obstacles and learning from your experiences is important in order to grow as a human being. Believe in yourself and your ideas, and you can truly accomplish anything.

Where can your products be purchased?

We have an awesome online store that you can find at www.sweteez.com, where you can purchase any of our towels with any of our 5 zipper colors or tank. We currently have Sweteez in local boutiques, hotels, and spas, and that’s just beginning!

Any plans to expand the company to a full line of athletic wear?

It is definitely something that I would love to do in the future, especially as a dance and Pilates instructor. I understand the needs of the clients and the benefits of what Sweteez can bring to the table.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years from now?

It is my goal to have Sweteez be the exclusive towel across the country in every athletic facility, whether it is a gym, yoga studio, Pilates studio, etc. I want Sweteez to bring awareness to athletes and active individuals that our health is important and we need to take charge of our lives. I want Sweteez to be the name and face of living a healthy lifestyle for everyone.

24 Hour Catwalk to premiere on Lifetime TV on January 10th

24 Hour Catwalk judges

Do you love Project Runway?  Are you white knuckling it when you watch the collections come down the runway at NY Fashion Week.  Then get ready…  The next fashion reality TV show is set to premiere on Lifetime TV on Tuesday, January 10th, 2012 at 10pm ET.

The show is called 24 Hour Catwalk.  It is different from Project Runway in that there are only four designers who are given 24 hours to design and complete a 3 piece collection that tells a story.  The designers will have help from a team of seamstresses and will race against the clock to present their collections to the judges. After the first competition only two designers will advance to the next challenge.

The Heidi Klum for 24 Hour Catwalk will be host and television personality and model Alexa Chung. Chung is a muse to many fashion designers because of her distinctive personal style. She frequently appears on best dressed lists, is a regular cover girl for Vogue, Elle and Harper’s Bazaar and is often seen in the front row at fashion shows.

I only wanted to do this if it was going to be a genuine search for designers and if I would be working alongside people who are legitimate in the fashion industry.” Chung said.

The judges include fashion designer Cynthia Rowley, New York Times best-selling author and fashion editor Derek Blasberg and NY power publicist James LaForce of Laforce and Stevens PR.

The winner of 24 Hour Catwalk will receive a $10,000 cash prize courtesy of Cover Girl and Herbal Essences.

Watch an exclusive preview now on People Magazine.

Featured Designer: BlacMéra by Yuliana Candra

Blacmera

Effortless elegance” is how Fashion and Jewelry Designer Yuliana Candra describes her label BlacMéra. Trained at San Diego State University and European School of Business at Reutlingen University in Germany, Yuliana launched BlacMéra in August of 2010.  The name is a morph of two words: Black and Merah. Merah means “red” in Indonesian. Black and Red are her favorite color combination because they are strong and powerful.

Wanting to know more about Yuliana and her international appeal I caught up with this cultured Designer who transforms the rich nuances into contemporary high fashion  from her seasoned exploration around the world and asked her some questions.

Who is the BlacMéra woman?

The BlacMéra woman is graceful, well-traveled, curious, bold, speak multiple languages, and inspired. She is versatile and she is a leader with power and will.

Who/What is your muse?

Angelina Jolie and Sophia Loren. Both of them are out of this world beautiful and iconic sirens. They are sexy, daring, mysterious, yet vulnerable and feminine at the same time. Angelina Jolie and Sophia Loren come from two different generations, hence a proof that what they represent is a timeless classic. It will never die. My models often wear cat’s eye signature looks from them.

Blacmera

How long did it take you to launch your line?

It took about 2 months preparation before I launched the brand, and another 3 months to show my first collection. It has been like a whirlwind ever since.

What was your biggest hurdle in launching your line and how did you overcome it?

My biggest hurdle is not having the traditional background and credentials in fashion and design. My audience was skeptical in the beginning, which is understandable because there are a lot of wannabes in the industry. But I persevered to prove that I work hard and I learn quickly to overcome my shortcomings. I actually don’t see it as a shortcoming. In a way I think it has liberated me to think outside of the box and to take an approach beyond the traditional conformance, both in launching my line and in bringing my designs to concrete products.

I read that you are an art aficionado. Who are some of your favorite artists?

Gustav Klimt (painter), Annie Leibovitz (photographer), and Steve Jobs (technologist). I use a lot of gold hues in my design, just like Klimt’s work. It’s a symbol for greatness and prosperity in many cultures. Portrait photography is the hardest trick of the trade in photography. The photographer needs to capture “the” deepest expression of the subject, often hidden in the facial subtlety. Leibovitz is a true master in her art. Being based in the world center of technology and innovation, I consider Steve Jobs as the ultimate artist who has successfully combined beauty and function.

I understand you have traveled extensively. What were some of your favorite places you visited?

This has always been a hard question for me since I have so many. Out of 35 countries and over 300 cities I visited, I absolutely fell in love with Fez in Morocco, Rajashtan in India, Ngorongoro Crater in Tanzania, Bali in Indonesia, and my adventure searching for Aurora Borealis near Reyjkavik in Iceland (and found it!). Fez is so rich in history. Every corner offers me a wealth of inspiration. Rajashtan is regal and elegant. Ngorongoro Crater offers privacy for you to bond with the natural beauty of Tanzanian flora and fauna. Bali is extremely touristy but for a reason. Something about the island that is just magical and makes you feel at ease and want to stay forever. Hunting for Aurora Borealis in Iceland is one of the most chilling experience I’ve had, and quite so literally. The icy chill pierced through the bones. It was the darkest dark I have ever been. It was as serene as when I was sitting on top of the dunes of Saharan desert in Morocco, just a few kilometers from the border with Algeria. It was that kind of experience that left a man to dialogue with his own conscience in the confessional chamber.

Blacmera

Your designs are truly a representation of Art meets Fashion. Can you tell us how this came about?

I have a great appreciation for all artforms. The time and sweat the artists put into them to create such masterpieces are remarkable. I grew up in an artistic environment. I am schooled in sculpting, painting, and woodcarving at an early age. I am a trained dancer and I took up photography and filmmaking as a hobby. My design process involves my emotional reaction from a certain artform. Many of my gowns are bold yet feminine as I picture them worn by a dancer and I wanted to make the gowns look as fluidly moving as the beautiful dancer. My sculpted designs, including the gown worn by Miss World Canada recently, were often inspired by architecture.

Which Fashion Designers inspire you most?

Valentino, Alexander McQueen, Elie Saab, and Chanel. All of them have boldness and romance in their design direction. Each piece is a statement without forgetting the femininity. I gravitate towards a similar recipe in my designs.

Blacmera Jewelry

When did you add the jewelry to your line?

I decided to add the jewelry line in the 6th month from the date I launched BlacMéra. My design is very rich and some of my clients asked me to help them create the overall look. So I thought why not extend BlacMéra to a luxury lifestyle brand, instead of just fashion.

Is it difficult trying to balance designing jewelry with all your clothing designs?

The balancing part is not so difficult since my clothing designs are very versatile. You can always get 3-4 different looks from each piece. You can go vintage and romantic or you can go modern and edgy. But in general designing jewelry is more costly and requires longer prototyping to production cycle.

What are you working on now?

I am working on my new collection for Fall 2012, which will be shown at the Couture Fashion Week in February in New York.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years from now?

I would like to run a lifestyle empire. Our life in this modern time is so interconnected; it is hard to isolate yourself in one. I want BlacMéra to grow and become an all-around lifestyle brand that is recognized globally. I can’t say exactly where the brand will be in 5 years time, but within our first year I have added the jewelry line and we are about to launch our accessory line. I am planning to add menswear next year and I am setting up BlacMéra Foundation as we speak – a non-profit arm of BlacMéra. If we continue to grow at this pace, I think we will be a pretty comprehensive lifestyle brand in the next 36-48 months.

AFINGO Fashion Forum: Ready to launch your line?

On Friday, April 1st, 2011 AFINGO sponsored the Fashion Forum in NYC.  AFINGO is the ultimate designer resource for emerging designers. Sign up for a FREE account and gain access to expert content, insider tools and industry connections to take your ideas from sketch to sale.

The Ready to Launch Your Line panel at the AFINGO Fashion Forum New York was arguably the most star-studded event to date. Moderated by New York Fashion Week founder Fern Mallis, the panel featured Duckie Brown co-founders Steven Cox and Daniel Silver, Adam Lippes of Adam fashion label, designers Bibhu Mohapatra and Miguelina Gambaccini, and Real Simple‘s Fashion Market Director Randi Packard.

All these designers stress the importance of having a rock solid business plan.

The Business of Fashion: Basics 2 – What is a business plan for and how do I go about writing it?

Adam Lippes struck success when he appeared on Oprah and shares his “wow” moment. Miguelina got her big break when Jennifer Lopez wore one of her dresses.  Randi Packard spoke from an Editor’s point of view and shared how she prefers a short introduction e-mail with line sheets or a lookbook attached.  She also shared that marking each garment with a “pull” number makes an Editor’s or Stylist’s job that much easier when communicating which garments will be used when shooting an editorial.

In this video clip these fashion superstars offer advice for young designers looking to launch their line.  So grab some paper and a pen and spend 30 minutes listening to the suggestions of some designers who have made it and now own their own label.

Kimberly Baker

With all markets in the fashion industry the inevitable question “what does it take for this business to succeed” comes up.  The fashion jewelry market is no different, as the competitors come from all levels, high end designers to budget friendly boutiques, and lower end brands are producing high end designs.  But with jewelry often being an outfit completer, especially in recent seasons where statement jewelry was the focus, unique and rare designs are sought after the most.  Jewelry designer Kimberly Baker has found a small piece of the pie in this ever growing niche.  Working initially as a makeup artist, frequent complements and inquiries from customers gave her the push she needed to transform her jewelry designing from hobby to profession.  And with the basis of her designs coming from what she feels and less about what’s “on trend”, her new found career has become a true labor of love.

A free spirit when it comes to the designs and techniques, Kimberly has no formal training in jewelry construction, other than a few courses at her local community college teaching her how to solder and cast.  The pieces, which consist of bold metal pieces that make frequent use of cultural symbolism, are not designed for any specific target market.   Rather Kimberly sees her designs on those seeking a unique, label-less piece of jewelry, such as the trend innovators.  Bold gold mesh bangles, stacked vintage style rings, and a heavy link necklace with an ornate snake pendant, are just several examples of her eccentric designs.

Like most new designers, Kimberly Baker does her part to be eco-friendly, utilizing all recycled gold and some recycled silver.  Her designs are all made here in the USA, in a design studio located behind her very own retail shop in Seattle.  The pieces can be found there, among other local boutiques, as well as online.
